These maps and books are what Hegel called the owl of Minerva — understanding arrives only after the world they document has passed. The birth of the liberal order brought the need for tools of measurement and quantification. Yet in trying to represent reality, borders
and sometimes imagined spaces appear — the Sea of the West from de Fonte in the 18th century, the elusive Northwest Passage, the sudden renaming of territories as empires shifted. Each map is an attempt to visualise a world that was moving forward.The gap between the map and the territory is where the interest lies.
