This features No. 23 and 26 from the Tableaux D'Histoire pour le Cours Elementaire series modern time , The 1789 Estates-General meeting, called by King Louis XVI to address France's financial crisis, quickly escalated into a conflict over representation. The Third Estate, representing the commoners, demanded to vote by head rather than by estate, but the privileged First (clergy) and Second (nobility) Estates resisted, leading the Third Estate to declare itself the National Assembly on June 17, 1789 , Cardinal Richelieu (1585–1642) was the chief minister to King Louis XIII of France from 1624 to 1642.
