Table Soleil  Height-Adjustable Drawing Table

A reading, drawing, and work table on a four-sided plinth base. The fluted column houses Georges Gay's patented extension mechanism up to 47 in,  a side lever unlocks the column, which then pulls up and locks at almost any height. The tabletop tilts, and the side frames fold up to function as bookends. The top also slides sideways, letting the table be used comfortably from an armchair ,  the rounded recesses in the base are designed to fit around the chair leg. Iron counterweights under the base keep it stable even when shifted off-centre.

The top is veneered in a diagonal grain with a mitered edge. Folded down, it reveals a plaque naming the inventor, Georges Gay, and the manufacturer, Émile Chouanard, who sold the piece as the Table "Soleil." All metal fittings are stamped Georges Gay Paris.

Chouanard sold the table through his hardware shop, Aux Forges de Vulcain, on Rue Saint-Denis in Paris,  listed in his late 19th-century catalogues under "Mechanical Furniture.

France, walnut, late 19th century. H 30/ 47 in  x W .32  x D.21   ,  adjustable up to 47 in.
