The Smith family business, based in London, was started by Charles Smith in 1799. He was the "engraver to the Prince of Wales" and initially made maps. Later, he created small and portable globes, probably competing with the Cary firm. When his son joined in 1845, their globe making became even more detailed and precise. They are a great example of classic globes, which show great map-making history and quality. In 1870, Smith & Son moved to 63 Charing Cross. Later, George Philip & Son took over the company and kept making Smith globes in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The pair featuring a terrestrial globe and celestial globe was an 18th century proper presentation of the progress in science and exploration .
