Born in Paris in 1927, Pierre Chapo went to work as an assistant in a woodworking workshop in Arizona. During this long trip in the mid-1950s, traveling through Mexico, the United States, and Canada in a Ford T, he refined his craftsmanship skills and discovered the work of Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van der Rohe, and Charlotte Perriand — architects of his time who also worked in furniture design. Between the 1960s and 1980s, he took part in furnishing many mountain chalets, using solid wood furniture .
Chapo 's work can be interpreted as a reaction to the commodification and dehumanization of craft and design of the 1960 and 70's which was mostly molded plastic , bent plywood and eccentric form
