Emmanuel-Augustin-Dieudonné-Joseph, comte de Las Cases (1766–1842), was a French atlas maker and writer best known for his admiring book on Napoleon. Born at the Castle of Las Cases near Revel, he studied at military schools in Vendôme and Paris before joining the navy and fighting in 1781–1782.
In 1801, under the pseudonym A. Lesage, he published an English atlas that became an instant success. After the Peace of Amiens (1802), he returned to France and released a French edition, Atlas historique, généalogique, chronologique et géographique. The work made him wealthy and eventually brought him to Napoleon’s attention—he later accompanied the emperor into exile on St. Helena in 1815.
