FRENCH MODERNIST bistro table MATEGOT Mid century

Mathieu Matégot trolley, France, 1950s. Bent and perforated sheet metal — rigitulle — Matégot's patented technique used from 1953 to 1959. Compass base in the manner of Prouvé. Stripped to bare metal and sealed with varnish.

Matégot worked alongside Prouvé, Perriand, Royère, and Adnet before returning to painting and tapestry in 1960. The rigitulle technique — bending, folding, and perforating sheet metal — is what defines his furniture work from this period.

Many of these pieces were painted over through the years. This one has been stripped back to the original metal — the perforations and forms visible as Matégot intended.
